One of Australia’s most experienced television chefs, Elizabeth Chong AM (pictured, right), sold her Richmond townhouse for $1.5 million at auction on Saturday.
The double storey three-bedroom dwelling in a laneway at 2/28 Abinger Street hit the market last month with a price guide of $1.2-$1.32 million.
Ms Chong paid $320,000 for it in 1997.
With the sale proceeds, the 88-year old plans to move to something single-storey.
The cook was a regular on The Bert Newton Show, and radio station, 3AW, taking viewers and listeners on major tours to Asian cities to learn about authentic local cuisines.
Ms Chong’s father is heralded with turning the dim sim into a snack food in Australia in the 1940s.
In 1961, Ms Chong set up a cooking school in the city’s Chinatown, going on to pen eight books.
Four years ago, Ms Chong was made a Member of the Order of Australia (coincidentally in the same year as another Melbourne cooking identity, Flower Drum founder Gilbert Lau).
Earlier this year, revered chef, Peter Rowland, visited Ms Chong’s Richmond kitchen as part of a series of cooking instruction articles published on his website.
Jellis Craig’s Elliot Gill and James Vine marketed 2/28 Abinger Street, Richmond which includes separate lounge and dining spaces, a car park and small yard.
The property is two holdings away from a prominent former grain silo which Fender Katsalidis redesigned into a six story apartment project.
