Artist closes Melbourne gallery
An inner-city gallery operated by one of Australia’s better known contemporary artists has closed after 16 months.
In a surprise move, Vincent Fantauzzo this week confirmed Fantauzzo Gallery will not reopen at 464 Chapel Street, South Yarra.
The business replaced a furniture store; the two-level heritage protected building contains 803 square metres.
Cushman & Wakefield’s Cam Taranto brokered that deal.
The property is not yet being marketed for lease again.
Elsewhere in the immediate area, Gurner and Qualitas are redeveloping the Jam Factory site (continues below).
With multiple new towers and a revamped retail area, that project carries a $1 billion-plus end value.
Four months ago, Bill McNee’s Vicland Property Group bought a long-dormant Chapel Street site with plans for an office and retail project.
That property was offered by Spotlight Property Group.
Mr Fantauzzo, known for portrait works of figures including Heath Ledger and his wife Asher Keddie, has won multiple Archibald Prize audience awards, operating across painting, portraiture and exhibition projects.
