Operator beats developers for beloved Melbourne nursery

The General Residential zoned Warrandyte site was offered vacant.

EXCLUSIVE

Business owners have beaten developers to another infill Melbourne nursery – this time at Warrandyte.

Beasley’s Nursery opened in 1976.

The Beasley family offered Beasley’s Nursery after 49 years in July with vacant possession.

On 1.07 hectares, zoned General Residential, it was expected townhouse developers would be the most competitive suitors.

Instead, another nursery operator is the buyer, it is speculated for nearly $3 million.

Gorman Commercial’s Tom Maule and Dean Alexander acted for transaction manager Steve Bennett of JACX Property.

With the deal, brothers Bill and Neil Beasley, who took over the business from their parents, Ron and Merle, will retire.

Another Melbourne nursery sale

Beasley’s Nursery at 195 Heidelberg-Warrandyte Road includes a showroom, office and café; opened in 1976, it is said to be one of the first Melbourne businesses of its type to offer a restaurant.

Surrey Hills’ Acorn Nursery and Oaks cafe recently sold for $6 million.

Abutting a 100-plus bay council car park, the holding is also near Anderson Creek and Blackburn roads, providing straightforward access to the Eastern Freeway.

The Beasley’s Nursery site spreads 1.07 hectares.

The deal comes months since an operator paid $6m for Surrey Hills’ Acorn Nursery and Oaks café, on 3035 sqm, again zoned residential.

Also this year, The Greenery, on 2.3ha on banks of the Yarra River at 4 Banksia St, Heidelberg, sold for $3m to the owner of the Mt Evelyn Garden Centre.

That seller was the operator of 47 years.

It was also expected to attract residential developer interest.

Warrandyte is 24 kilometres north east of town.
