Producers of hit TV show The Block are reported to be buying a vacant tract of land in Melbourne’s bayside Brighton for the 2020 season.
The c2770 square metre block at 360-364 New Street, on the north-east corner of Orchard Street, once accommodated the Andrina Private Nursing Home.
Sources said the vendor, a townhouse developer, was seeking about $13 million for the holding, which was not for public sale.
Savills Julian Heatherich is understood to have instead brokered deal worth almost $15 million, but declined to comment.
According to this Sunday Herald Sun item, the producers are seeking to subdivide the Brighton holding into five lots.
It was at first speculated that the producers may try a new concept and allow for contestants to build something from scratch. But instead they will relocate five unrenovated homes of varying eras to the block.
When The Block producers acquired a former nursing-home-turned-block-of-land in Elsternwick a couple of years ago, they also subdivided the plot into five, then relocated to them, historic homes in Melbourne which were facing the wrecking ball.
Each proposed New Street dwelling could sell for more than $4 million given market values in Brighton, considered one of Melbourne’s most exclusive.
The former Andrina Private Nursing Home was acquired as a residential development play for $5.3 million in mid-2013 by Nick Williams, the son of businessman and horse trainer, Lloyd.
The Williams family sold it in March, 2015, for $10.23 million.
The next owner proposed One Orchard: 13 townhouses, each three-storeys and with three bedrooms, priced from between $2.3 million and $3.3 million (artist’s impression, below).
Last August, we reported details of the five homes which The Block producers have since built into the former Oslo Hotel in Grey Street, St Kilda.
This hotel redevelopment is the subject of the 2019 series set to air from August.
