One in Seven Dwellings Within City of Yarra Now Public Housing

In February, the Department of Human Services commenced building a major $43 million, 142-unit development at the Atherton Gardens estate in Fitzroy (pictured, above), having started work on a major Carlton redevelopment last year.

Next month the department will start constructing a $70 million, 207-unit complex with six new buildings at its Elizabeth Street, Richmond compound.

An additional 202 dwellings are currently being developed at various other Yarra-zoned sites by community housing organisations.

In recent years the government and housing co-ops have been purchasing development sites, disused motels and other buildings to rebuild as public housing, and ease the burgeoning waiting list. An affordable housing arm associated with government have also been signing major leases for a wide range of accommodation.
