House where Dalai Lama stayed in Australia, for rent
The distinctive Fitzroy North home where the Dalai Lama stayed during his 1982 Melbourne tour has been listed for rent.
Considered to be one of the finest dwellings in Alfred Crescent – the suburb’s most valuable street – the c1887 four level home, with its prominent tower, is asking $1990 per week.
This rent is actually a drop on the $2200 per week 43 Alfred Crescent was seeking this time last year and achieving in 2015.
The Dalai Lama stayed at the address when it was owned by a sponsor of his visit.
It has sold twice since then – in 1996 for $735,000 and in 2016, for $2.25 million.
At the preferred northern end of Alfred Crescent – which circles the popular Edinburgh Gardens, the home includes four bedrooms, formal and informal living and dining rooms, a cellar and dressing room.
A turret with a dome-shaped roof – like the balcony off the master bedroom – provides views over the park to the Melbourne CBD, about four kilometres away.
The period home retains many decorative features on its walls, floors, fireplaces and staircases. There’s also a pool in the backyard.
Chambers Real Estate’s Sharyn Webber listed 43 Alfred Crescent for lease today. The rent includes monthly gardening and pool servicing.
