Chip Eng Seng to bring Hyatt brand back to Adelaide

Developer Chip Eng Seng has won approval to build a 27-storey hotel in the Adelaide CBD – and secured Hyatt Regency to manage it.

Construction of the 295-suite inn is set to begin next year and be completed by 2023.

The hotel is earmarked for a 1283 square metre plot at 51 Pirie Street which Chip Eng Seng agreed to buy last year for $14.5 million.

Chip Eng Seng immediately announced its intention to build a hotel on the site. Artist’s impressions released at the time (image, right) showed that a historic building would be retained. However, the latest images of the proposals show no part of the current building would be incorporated.

The project would mark a return for the Hyatt brand in Adelaide: it currently operates from seven Australian sites, in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Canberra.

Chip Eng Seng’s permitted complex contains 750 square metres of event space, a restaurant, café, swimming pool, fitness facilities and rooftop bar.

Hyatt vice president real estate and development, Asia Pacific, Monika Dubai, told website in this item that the Adelaide hotel would “fill a gap” in Hyatt’s domestic Australian network.

“The hotel is part of our strategy to provide more offerings to travellers as we expand in Australia, with new destinations such as Adelaide and Brisbane that will complement our current portfolio”.

Chip Eng Seng Corporation’s executive director and group chief executive officer, Raymond Chia, said the company “selected Hyatt because of its established reputation and leadership in the hospitality industry”.

In May, we reported that the Hyatt brand was returning to Queensland following a commitment by the accommodation provider to manage a complex at Woolloongabba.

Hyatt is also opening in several Melbourne locations including 9-27 Downie Street in the CBD (artist’s impression, below) and 2-10 River Street in South Yarra.
