Built, Wesfarmers form housing venture

Built and Wesfarmers have formed a 50:50 joint venture targeting Australia’s housing supply, focusing on offsite apartment manufacturing.

To be known as Built Living, the venture will produce modular and precast components using design for manufacture and assembly, aiming to cut construction costs and delivery times at scale.

The partners are planning an initial facility at the Neerabup Automation and Robotics Precinct, north of Perth.

It will have the capacity to support more than 2,000 apartments a year.

First output is targeted for 2028, subject to approvals.

The state government is backing the project via a long-term land lease, with part of production earmarked for public and affordable housing (continues below).

The platform is also intended to service third-party developments and social infrastructure projects.

A Built spokesperson said it has spent two years researching offshore construction models, particularly in Europe where factory based delivery is used to reduce construction costs and accelerate built times.

The company has also invested heavily in digital design systems to support the model, they added.

The business will operate independently with a dedicated management team to be led by former Lendlease executive Dale Connor.
