SilkGear will open at 86 Bourke Street mid-year.

The ex-Hill of Content store was offered for lease in August.

A two month old consumer electronics retailer – now seeking supply chain partners – has leased the former Hill of Content store at 86 Bourke Street.

SilkGear, created by Melbourne-based vicenarian Yunfei Yang, will open mid-year after a fit-out.

The three level, 425 square metre building will dub as the company’s headquarters as well as a showroom.

The deal comes eight months since the bookshop quit the property after 103 years.

It is now based in part of the ex-Fast Eddy’s restaurant at 32 Bourke St.

The former Hill of Content store sold two years ago for $5.3 million.

The vendor, a regional based former owner of Collins Booksellers, held 73 years (continues below).

The Hill of Content quit 86 Bourke Street in July.

The buyer initially said it planned to occupy for a Chinese restaurant.

Jones Real Estate’s Paul Jones managed the lease campaign.

“It is a…strategic choice to position ourselves in the ‘Paris End’ directly opposite Hermès…I believe that the heritage and prestige of this precinct are the only fitting backdrop for truly world-class technology,” Mr Yang said.

“Inside this three storey heritage building, we will curate the absolute peak of global innovation – focusing on AI hardware, robotics and future tech gear with a spotlight on innovation from the east,” he added.

“We are building a space where technology is seen, touched and understood not just as a tool but as art,” according to the executive.

“We are seeking top-tier tech brands and supply chain partners across AI hardware, Smart Hom, Maker sectors and beyond.

“If you have exceptional products, SilkGear is your premier showroom in Australia”.
