State government buys $60.5m site for freeway

The Palaszczuk government is paying $60.5 million for a high-density apartment site it intends to use for an infrastructure project.

The 19.134 hectare parcel (pictured top with dotted outline) formed part of Villawood’s The Surrounds housing estate, at Helensvale.

The developer paid $20m in 2018, earmarking it for about 1500 dwellings in buildings of up to 10 floors.

An aged care complex and retirement village was also planned.

Instead, the land will be utilised for the Coomera Connector project (story continues below).

The deal comes two years since the government paid $13.97m for 25 housing blocks on Citron Avenue – also needed for the road works.

Just prior to then, it paid the Buckler family $20.5m for parcels near the Helensvale train station, also needed for the infrastructure job.

The precinct is about 15 kilometres north west of Surfers Paradise.
