Apple South Yarra store off the table

Plans for Melbourne’s first Apple superstore at South Yarra may have fallen through.

Sources say APN Property Group, which owns the prominent Fun Factory site the IT group was said to be eyeing, is revising its $200 million redevelopment plan, and the new design might not be appropriate for its requirement.

The new proposal could include an apartment tower of over 30 levels, agents say, a hotel, and more than 12,000 square metres of retail space.

A council spokesman confirmed it had met the landlord to discuss a major proposal.

It had been reported Apple needed a three-level, 2000 sq m building.

The Fun Factory location, at the north-western corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street, is one of Melbourne’s highest profile suburban locations.

APN is developing the site with Sydney-based Freedom Furniture co-founder Peter Palan.

Apple has one Australian store, at Sydney – which opens Thursday.
