Drakes Supermarket founder and managing director Roger Drake has made a sentimental property play, at Mount Gambier.

The executive’s retail giant has teamed with Leyton Property to snare the ex-Coles on 1.5 hectares at the south east corner of James and Elizabeth streets, to occupy.

Over 50 years ago, Mr Drake managed the Coles outlet (Coles meanwhile moved to a Ferrers St site four years ago).

Drakes plans to open late this year after a renovation.

Colliers acted for NRG, or National Retail Group, a family office of Chemist Warehouse executives.

Full circle moment: Roger Drake

Mr Drake described the deal as “a full circle moment”.

“I was once told I’d never make it in this industry,” he added (story continues below).

The Mt Gambier store will be Drakes’ 69th.

“Coming back to revive this store for the Mount Gambier community is something I’m incredibly proud of,” according to the executive.

The outlet will be the Torrensville-headquartered group’s 69th.

Drakes director John-Paul Drake, Roger’s son, said Mount Gambier has long been underserved by major retailers.

“South Australia doesn’t just end at Adelaide,” he added.

“We’re excited to bring Drakes to Mount Gambier and become part of the community,” according to the executive.

Mount Gambier is in the south east corner of the state, about 15 kilometres west of the Victorian border.
