LaTrobe University to Sell Former Mayday Hills Hospital, Beechworth

The Beechworth hospital at one stage had 1200 patients, and its garden produced enough fruit and vegetables to support hospital visitors, its staff, the Beechworth Gaol, and the Beechworth Benevolent Asylum for Aged Care.

A fire tore through the male wing in 1951, destroying many buildings that were not replaced. Over time, former garden space has been subdivided and sold off to private owners.

La Trobe purchased the site in 1996 to use as a campus which it shut last year. It has been seeking government approval to sell the site since that time.

A university spokesman told Capital Gain the campus should hit the market later this year. It’s believed the site will be targeted at developers, as well as investors, or owner-occupiers.
