Jacques Reymond sells former Prahran restaurant to prestige home buyer

Jacques Reymond operated an eponymous restaurant at 78 Williams Road, Prahran, for 23 years until 2014.

Chef Jacques Reymond has sold the Prahran property which for decades until 2014 housed his eponymous restaurant.

Ending an era, 78 Williams Road, is trading to a prestige home buyer and will be converted to a residence.

For 28 years, the property has been occupied as a hospitality venue (after Mr Reymond vacated, it was renovated and rented to another diner, Woodland House, which recently also left).

Mr Reymond this month opened a new eatery – Frederic and Fred’s bar – within a small corner retail space at 9-11 Cremorne Street, Cremorne, an area in Melbourne’s inner east sometimes dubbed ‘silicon Yarra’ because of its high-tech tenants.

Colliers International’s Ben Baines, Guy Wells and Alex Browne marketed the heritage protected property at 78 Williams Road, Prahran.

The agents declined to comment about any part of the deal.

When it was listed in September, though, it carried price hopes of more than $4 million.

Given the rear car park, the offering was expected to arouse interest from investors or owner occupiers which might consider retaining it as a restaurant or converting it into an office, childcare centre or medical complex.

Apartment builders prepared to undertake a boutique project incorporating the main residence, were also expected to show an interest.

The mansion was built in the 1880s as a wedding gift for the owner’s daughter.

The site spreads 1011 square metres and is near the High Street tram network.

Coincidentally, 78 Williams Road is identical to its neighbour (#80) – a home which sold in 2011 for $2.1 million.

The restaurant was spread over two levels and includes five dining spaces.
