Hickory buys notorious waste dump
An industrial site which became one of Victoria’s largest illegal waste dumps has sold.
Construction giant Hickory is believed to have paid $16.6 million ex-GST for 300-400 Broderick Road, Lara, north of Geelong.
The 14.5 hectare Industrial 2 zoned holding was marketed by liquidators for The Australian Sawmilling Company Pty Ltd which paid about $1.5m in 2004.
Prior to 2019, the property was used by an operator claiming to recycle tyres and other materials, eventually becoming one of the state’s worst illegal stockpiles with a rubbish mound reaching 20 metres high.
The state government spent c$71m over three years clearing the site after intervening on environmental and public safety grounds; hundreds of tonnes of waste was removed.
Colliers’ Nick Saunders and Jonathon Lumsden with Sutherland Farrelly’s Grant Sutherland and Paul Sutherland were the agents (continues below).
In the Geelong employment precinct, the property was marketed for its development upside.
The 24.5ha block next door, on Forest Rd south, contains four major office/warehouses.
This pocket of Lara, near Avalon, is about 13 kilometres from Geelong’s CBD.
