Hamilton Island Enterprises – which Blackstone bought from the Oatley family in December for a reported $1.2 billion – has appointed people for its two most senior positions.

Chris Mills comes in as chief executive officer after nearly three years undertaking this role with Sunshine Coast Airport.

For seven years until 2022, Mr Mills was CEO of Queensland Airports Limited.

He has also held this position with South Bank Corporation, between 2003-2007, and Experience Gold Coast, via a contract in 2023.

The executive has also held a senior roles with Dreamworld, D’ALBORA Marinas and PwC, and sits on company boards for Event Management Queensland, the Australian Airports Association and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council.

“Hamilton Island is one of Australia’s most iconic destinations and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to lead it,” Mr Mills said.

“I’m excited to build on the incredible foundation that’s been established here and to work alongside a talented team to deliver exceptional experiences for our guests while unlocking new opportunities for growth,” he added.

Blackstone’s purchase covered Hamilton Island Enterprises’ leasehold interests and tourism operations across Hamilton and Dent islands, rather than the privately owned residences on the islands.

Hamilton Island chairman John Borghetti said Mr Mills had extensive experience across aviation, tourism and major infrastructure.

Mr Mills replaces Nick Dowling, who had been CEO since 2025 and Group CEO of the Oatley family’s Balmoral Australia since 2018 (continues below).

Ex-NRL executive joins

Meanwhile, Renae Trimble has been appointed chief operating officer – a position which started two months ago.

The executive previously served as the National Rugby League chief commercial officer, leading revenue and fan engagement, and was CEO of Accor Plus for two years until 2025 after holding senior roles there since 2008.

Ms Trimble has held national sales manager positions too, with Marriott and Rydges Hotels & Resorts.

At Hamilton Island, she will oversee operations spanning the accommodation, food and beverage businesses, retail, activities and marina.

“Hamilton Island holds a truly special place in the hearts of Australians, and I couldn’t be more excited to join at such a pivotal moment,” the executive said.

“I’ll be working closely with our teams to drive future commercial growth through deepening our customer focus,” she added.

Mr Borghetti said Ms Trimble brings hospitality and commercial expertise to the leadership team.
