Green light for $2b data centre, AI factory

NextDC has won permission to replace Port Melbourne’s Westgate Park print plant – which for decades until recently produced the Herald Sun – with a five-level data centre with AI factory and centre of excellence (artist’s impression, top).
The end value of the 50,000 sqm complex set for 127 Todd Road – part of Fishermans Bend’s employment precinct – is put by the developer at $2 billion.
It paid the Herald and Weekly Times $55 million in 2019 – transferring the 2.64 hectare block to another entity two years ago.
A development permit for the project to be known as M4 was submitted early last year.
NextDC builds portfolio
NextDC has completed another data centre in the suburb – as well as across town in Tullamarine and West Footscray.

M4 will contain up to 150mW of power. It is also designed with an energy system utilising waste heat, as well as solar.
“Purpose-built for sovereign AI, HPC, advanced manufacturing and deep tech, the campus strengthens Australia’s competitive edge across the Five Eyes and positions Victoria as a national digital infrastructure hub,” NextDC chief executive officer and managing director, Craig Scroggie, said.
“This isn’t just a data centre – it’s critical infrastructure for Australia’s AI future,” he added.
Construction is expected to start this year.
