First Homes at Niddrie Quarry Site Under Construction

The 47-hectare quarry, which had not been used since the early 1970s (except as a backdrop for television shows including Halifax FP) was the biggest quarry revival site in Australia. It took developer VicUrban three years, and 2.5 million cubic metres of soil, to fill.

During that time, property prices around the East Keilor, Niddrie and Essendon pockets skyrocketed.

In the late 1990s, the local community battled and beat the Kennett government, which had earmarked the site as a toxic waste dump.
