City of Bendigo Appeals to VCAT to Stop Shopping Centre Development

The Kennington Village retail development, proposed for the corner of Condon Street and Marnie Road, will include a two-level shopping centre with a large supermarket, a mini department store, 21 specialty shops, eight office tenancies, a hardware store, two restaurants and 584 car spaces.

“If this development were to go ahead it would have a significant negative effect on existing businesses including those located at Strath Village, Strath Hill and Strathfieldsaye shopping centres,” said City of Greater Bendigo CEO Craig Niemann.

“Because of the potential significant detrimental impact to the rest of the City’s retail and commercial precinct we have requested the Minister for Planning to intervene.”

The council is preparing a Structure Plan for the area it wants VCAT to consider before making a decision.

A spokesman for Contour Planning, representing the developer, was unavailable for comment. The proposed development will include the demolition of the existing Victory College.
