BHP razing ‘world’s toughest pub’ for park

Pier Park will replace Port Hedland’s Pier Hotel.

BHP is razing the outback hotel once described as the world’s toughest pub, for a park.

The mining giant paid $5.5 million for Port Hedland’s Pier Hotel on 5733 square metres last July – soon after the operator shut shop.

Developed in the 1890s – one of two watering holes in the area – and reconstructed in the 1960s, it contains 20 suites across two floors and a four bedroom manager’s residence, as well as the pub and gaming venue with TAB facilities.

Following several violent attacks in the 1970s, national media dubbed the venue, opposite Port Hedland Major Port, the world’s toughest pub.

The proposed community space, Pier Park, with picnic tables and native vegetation, is expected to open next year.

Port Hedland is 1600 kilometres north of Perth.
