Redback earmarked for student accommodation
A North Melbourne pub once part-owned by footballer Wayne Carey is to be replaced with a nine-level student accommodation complex.
Construction of a new tower on the site of the Redback Brewery Hotel on Flemington Road, starts next year.
It will contain 240 units, which Castran’s Mark Forytarz is now marketing off-the-plan.
The proposal comes after attempts to sell to medical-related investors in 2007 fell through.
The residential redevelopment was lodged last year; it called for the pub to be razed.
Redback’s profits have reportedly dwindled since council’s decision last year to remove electronic gambling machines – which was well after Carey sold his interest.
In March, 2000, a glass pane fell from a second level gashing the footballer’s former team mate Anthony Stevens, who was standing outside below.
Mr Carey is presently also seeking a buyer for a $3m Broadbeach Waters house.
