Sydney’s ‘most recognisable pub’ sells after decades

Also today, we are reporting Roma’s Royal on 99 sold.

It is the end of an era in Surry Hills with Margaret Hargreave selling the Shakespeare Hotel – considered by some Sydney’s most recognisable pub – ending a near 50 year association.

The Shakespeare Hotel, built in 1879.

Laurence Collins is the buyer – for c$17 million.

That publican also controls the leasehold of Balmain’s The London Hotel.

Also today, we are reporting Waratah Group sold a pub in Queensland’s outback Roma after nearly four years.

Shakespeare Hotel

Established in 1879, the Shakespeare Hotel occupies a 244 square metre Mixed Use site at 198-200 Devonshire Street, on the north west corner of Steel, also facing Steel Lane.

Also known as The Shakey, Ms Hargreaves bought it in stages, starting with the leasehold, in 1975.

The freehold cost $165,000 three years later, after which, her family – then with three children – moved in (story continues below).

Over three floors, it contains a bistro, gaming room with 10 electronic gambling machines, two bars – one with TAB facilities, and six guest suites.

“Everyone has a story about The Shakey and I just want to carry forward the incredible legacy that Margaret [Hargreave] has created,” Mr Collins said.

“I am not intending to change the overall fabric of the hotel as this is what makes it special for everyone who visits,” he added.

JLL’s Kate MacDonald, John Musca and Greg Jeloudy were the agents.

The deal comes about four weeks since we reported the Kospetas family’s Universal Hotels bought Surry Hills’ c1873 Evening Star Hotel – with 24 EGSm – for $17m.
