Multiplex crane hits height not seen in Melbourne’s Paris-end for nearly 20 years

A Multiplex crane has been hoisted to a height the builder says has not been seen in the Melbourne CBD’s prestigious ‘Paris-end’ for nearly 20 years.

Images published by Multiplex at the 80 Collins Street precinct redevelopment show it towering over the 50-storey 35 Collins Street across the road.

Multiplex said the crane, its second at the development site, underwent its “final jump” last week.

The glass tower it is attached to, known as 72-82 Collins Street, or just 80 Collins Street, is nearing completion.

Set to rise 44 levels, it is cantilevered over the historic building formerly occupied by boutique retailer, Le Louvre, which once claimed the 74 Collins Street address.

Last month, Sydney-based Dexus paid QIC $1.476 billion for this office and a portfolio of assets adjoining it including an as-yet-unbuilt hotel and shopping centre, and the former Nauru House at 80 Collins Street.

Nine months ago, Dexus paid $230 million for two offices across the road from the 80 Collins Street precinct. These properties, 52 Collins Street and 60 Collins Street, covering 2000 square metres of land, are expected to now make way for a landmark office – likely to be the next time we see a crane this high again in the area.

Skyscrapers 101 Collins Street and 120 Collins Street – which both opened in 1991 – are arguably the highest-profile offices in Melbourne’s Paris-end.

The headquarters of EY, which rises 35-storeys into the airspace of the former Herald & Weekly Times building at 8 Exhibition Street, was completed in 2005.

The office at 72-82 Collins Street is nearing completion.
