Historic Surrey Hills boys home sold

The Surrey Hills property (marked) has sold after 26 years.

Youth With a Mission Church has sold Surrey Hills’ historic Mackillop Estate – held 26 years.

The proposed Piccolo House at Kew.

The 9147 square metre largely heritage protected property covering 1 Kent Road and 24 Durham found favour with Vali Valibhoy’s newsagency turned development company Mag Nation.

The property failed to sell in 2020 with a guide of c$25 million.

It was listed via a different agency last September with a c$20m guide.

It is speculated to be selling at about that range.

Surrey Hills is about 11 kilometres east of Melbourne’s CBD.

News of the deal comes a week after Michael Piccolo’s Piccolo Group opened a display suite to market a luxury residential project in place of an ex-nursing home, in Kew’s tree-lined Barry St – another leafy east supersite, spreading 8475 sqm.

With 60 dwellings excluding a shared apartment resident’s can book in advance – branded Piccolo House – the cheapest two bedroom units are $2.2m.

Next chapter for historic site

On land bought in 1890 by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart – a group founded by Mary Mackillop – the Surrey Hills complex was built as St Joseph’s Home for Destitute Children.

The vendor, also known as YWAM Medical Ships, will tip proceeds into other initiatives.

It was represented for the sale by Stonebridge Property Group’s Julian White, Andrew Milligan and Chao Zhang.

Mag Nation is behind an apartment proposal in Fitzroy North at 290 Park St, on the south east corner of Nicholson.
