Government shelves South Brisbane broadcast centre plan
The state government has abandoned plans to replace South Brisbane’s outgoing Visy Glass factory as the 2032 Olympics International Broadcast Centre.
The surprise move comes after a Games Independent Infrastructure and Co-ordination report it commissioned cited concerns including allowing for flood-risks would greatly add to the public cost of what would be a temporary building.
Instead, the Palaszczuk government will put the seven hectare riverfront parcel to the private sector with plans for an entertainment-based project, similar to nearby South Bank.
It paid Visy $165m in 2022.
The block is one of the most significant within a largely industrial zone earmarked in 2014 as urban infill and cultural development.
The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre has been mooted as an alternative IOBC.
