Former Finishing School for Ladies on the Market

The former Miss Ainslie’s School for Young Ladies at 101 Powlett Street is Melbourne’s own version of Eggleston Hall, from the reality TV show Ladette to Lady. It taught tea-cup-holding and leg-crossing etiquette from 1874 to 1896, before being turned into a pub.

The Presbyterian Church bought the property in 1956 and added a large annex to the southern side for residents.

The renamed Magnolia Court is now an investment property, leased to the owners of a 26-room boutique hotel. Lachlan Castran of John H. Castran is selling the property with Mulcahy & Co, and said a prospective buyer intended to restore it into a private home.

Mr Castran said the property would appeal to investors, as the existing tenants have a long lease. Magnolia Court is on a 917-square-metre block and is expected to sell for about $5.5million.
