Federal Government to Offload CSIRO Highett Site Soon

Mayor Alex del Porto said it is council’s view that three to four hectares of the outgoing CSIRO site can be protected or restored to provide recreation space for residents. The remainder of the site is expected to make way for medium density housing. The land falls within the area council has designated as the Highett Neighbourhood Centre, and is near a mooted Southland train station.

In March, the state government’s development arm VicUrban paid $7 million for a 15,000 square metre site at 329 Bay Road abutting the CSIRO’s Highett laboratory. A residential redevelopment is planned for this site.
