Equipment rental giant to consolidate at Brisbane Airport

United Rentals – the world’s largest equipment rental company – will consolidate two Brisbane container yards to an uber-green one, set to start construction at Brisbane Airport.
The Connecticut based group has signed a 15 year initial lease with Brisbane Airport Corporation for a 3.7 hectare site, set for a 14,000 sqm warehouse capable of holding over 1000 shipping containers, and a 6835 sqm workshop.
The building will also include 600 sqm of offices.
Completion is scheduled in the third quarter.
The deal comes nine months since United bought Royal Wolf Australia.
Also today, we are reporting the Port of Brisbane renewed Cement Australia to a nearby 9.2ha Bulwer Island facility for 40 years.
Largest greenfield development: United Rentals
United Rentals regional vice president Neil Littlewood said the Brisbane Airport facility is the company’s largest Australian greenfield development and first purpose-built one since the Royal Wolf takeover.
It would also be a flagship hub site, according to the executive, servicing smaller locations (story continues below).
“From a practical perspective, there was readily available land in a location that we know was still growing and will allow us to tap into the medium-term opportunities of the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic,” he added.
The outgoing warehouses are in Banyo, about three kilometres away.
“We can minimise disruption to our 40-plus staff in our existing two locations and there are the economics of not having to relocate large distances and of being able to service customers from this connected location,” Mr Littlewood said.
“Finally, the site being owned by the Brisbane Airport itself was appealing as the approval and development process will be streamlined,” he added.
The deal comes two years BAC secured Aramex Australia, formerly known here as Fastline Australia, to a nearby 2.6ha office/warehouse – at the time one of the largest industrial project’s in the airport’s history.
BAC controls a 2700ha leasehold, much of which it is seeking to develop over the long-term.
Australia Post, DHL, Downer, GPC Repco, Haymans Electrical and Miele are amongst other occupiers.
