Dean Montgomery offers historic homestead after major renovation
Developer and property investor Dean Montgomery has listed the historic St Albans Stud after 15 years and a major renovation.
Th 3.4 hectare holding covering 6 and 8-30 Homestead Drive, St Albans Park – a south east Geelong suburb – carries $7-$7.5 million price hopes.
The businessman paid just over $2m.

Elsewhere in the area, Mr Montgomery owns the ex-Geelong Post Office, now a boutique hotel, Old Geelong Gaol and wool stores in 2022 earmarked for a residential-based mixed use redevelopment in partnership with Gurner.
He also controls the ex-Fletcher Jones factory at Warrnambool and Terang’s Glenormiston College.
St Albans Stud
With a 30 rooms – six bedrooms, an office, art studio, greenhouse and numerous living and dining spaces amongst them – St Albans Stud was penned in c1873 by Melbourne architect James T Conlan.
Also with stables with 30 stalls, a tennis court, day paddocks, botanic gardens and a guest house, it was previously a reception venue and horse stud
“The property holds a significant place in Australia’s racing history producing a direct lineage to 10 Melbourne Cup winners,” the selling agents said.
“The legendary Phar Lap was secretly hidden here before the 1930 Melbourne Cup due to a previous attempt on his life,” they added.
“Today, the homestead has been meticulously and thoughtfully modernised, blending the romance of the past with contemporary comforts,” according to the executives.
Reviving an agistment business is an option, they said.
St Albans Park is five kilometres from Geelong’s CBD.
