“In this case it’s a result of the court decision. It’s clear there are uncertainties and anomalies. The government has not made out its case for how long it’s going to clear up those uncertainties,” said opposition spokesman for financial management and housing strategy, Greg Pearce.
Sylvia Hale, NSW Greens MP, said “if a developer needs to acquire private property for a commercial project the developer has to reach an agreed price with the landowner. Neither the council nor the government should intervene to the benefit of the developer, especially if the council or the government is a partner with the developer in the project.”
The Urban Development Institute of Australia is reported as telling the Australian Financial Review “these acquisition powers are a function of every key global city and absolutely vital to ensuring that we have enough housing and employment opportunities to meet our growing population. Sydney is now reliant on fragmented and unpredictable land parcels to meet its housing production needs.”
