Campaign launched to replace Kew’s ex-VicRoads HQ

Coincidentally in January, the site which housed the Barker station – before Kew – sold.

Development Victoria has launched a campaign to sell the ex-VicRoads headquarters, near Kew Junction, for a residential project.

The c1888 ex-Kew Post Office at Kew Junction.

About 500 apartments, a bulk allocated for affordable housing, could be delivered in eight level buildings.

VicRoads is now headquartered in Ringwood.

One of the existing two 1960s offices, at the southern boundary (pictured, top), can be repurposed.

Covering 1.9 hectares at 60 Denmark Street, also highly exposed to Wellington St and Stratford Avenue, the government describes the site – until 1957 accommodating the Kew train station – as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The end value is expected to exceed $250 million.

The listing comes three months since we reported developers traded the Hawthorn site which for years accommodated the Barker station – before Kew.

VicRoads relocated most of the final functions undertaken at Kew early last year to a new QIC owned headquarters in Ringwood, between Eastland and the station.

Major project planned

Having declared the Kew land surplus to needs, the Department of Transport and Planning rezoned it residential early last month.

“We’re now exploring different ways to develop the site, including partnering with the private sector to deliver a mix of housing options,” a spokesperson said.

“Our goal is to create a well-balanced community with homes that suit a range of needs,” they added; a community consultation period closed on Friday (April 11).

Development Victoria’s expressions of interest campaign for a development partner, announced Saturday, closes May 16.

It is being represented by JLL’s Josh Rutman and Jesse Radisich.

This pocket of Kew is about six kilometres east of the CBD.
