Recently redundant Footscray Hospital set to be razed
Development Victoria will begin demolishing the recently vacated Footscray Hospital in the second half of 2026, with an update on the future master-planned urban renewal expected during the works.
The 6.6 hectare Gordon Street site, also exposed to Arthur, Eleanor and Mavis streets and Ballarat Road, is expected to take up to two years to fully decommission and remediate.
The southern car park is not included in the demolition and will remain in council ownership, serving the Western Private Hospital.
The replacement Footscray Hospital, which reportedly cost $1.5 billion to complete, opened in February less than a kilometre away at 89 Ballarat Road.
Significant site
Western Health vacated the old Footscray Hospital, 160 Gordon St, last month.
The site will be secured as the decommission requires remediation (continues below).
The state government planning arm has yet to finalise a redevelopment scheme but the site is considered one of the largest inner-west urban renewal opportunities.
Community consultation conducted through Engage Victoria in 2023 and 2024 sought feedback from c1500 residents on potential uses including education and community facilities, as well as housing.
What is expected is at least one park and possible reactivation of the former psychiatric building.
The precinct sits close to Victoria University, six kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD.
