Outgoing REA chief downsizes to $9m mini manor

The former Wilson home in Toorak covered 1525 square metres.

Soon to retire REA Group chief executive officer Owen Wilson and his wife, Leisl, have snapped up the historic Afton, in Armadale, for c$8.9 million.

The Armadale home took 18 months to renovate.

The c1889 two level home was listed in March by interior designer Melissa Giuffrida and her husband, Mike, who paid $4.25m in 2019 before renovating.

Afton sold against a $7.5-$8 million guide.

The initial guide was $7.5-$8m.

Sotheby’s Max Ruttner and Antoinette Nido were the agents.

$9m downsizer

On Rose Street – about 100 metres from the Toorak border – the Wilson home was developed for newsagent Alfred Chitty as Tilton Afton.

It contains five bedrooms, an office and two living zones – one sunken, overlooking a yard with pool.

A large master dressing room opens to a terrace.

The total internal area is 331 square metres.

There’s a further 171 sqm external living space and a 57 sqm garage/workshop.

The Armadale site spreads 464 square metres.

The refurbishment is said to have taken 18 months.

Taylor Knights was the architect while Ben Scott was the landscaper.

Ms Giuffrida’s Collecte was responsible for the interior decorating.

The site spreads 464 sqm walking distance to Beatty Avenue shops.

Formalised May, the sale came about 18 months after the Wilsons sold their former family home, on 1525 sqm with a tennis court, in Linlithgow Road, Toorak, $14.35m.

That property took seven months to sell after hitting the market with a $16-$17m guide.

Mr Wilson is also a Hawthorn Football Club director.

The executive is set to be replaced at REA next month with former CAR Group chief, Cameron McIntyre.
