Retiring Australian Labor Party frontbencher Jenny Macklin has sold her Ivanhoe East home for a price speculated to be between $3 million and $3.25 million.

The renovated dwelling with four bedrooms, a study and pool, sits on a 1412 square metre block with views over the adjoining Chelsworth Park, which backs onto the Yarra River.

The location is also near The Boulevard, a street which becomes an attraction for many Melburnians in December when residents decorate their homes in Christmas-themed trimmings.

Ms Macklin found a buyer nine days after offering her home for sale via Miles Real Estate, according to realestate.com.au. The marketing agents were Stewart Oldmeadow and Brad Pearce.

The Member for Jagajaga, who served as a minister in both the Rudd and Gillard federal governments, paid $395,000 for the Ivanhoe East home in 1996 – the year she was first elected.

It is reported Ms Macklin, also the longest serving female ALP member of the House of Representatives, and her partner, Ross Turnerare, are downsizing.

Upon announcing her retirement from politics in July – to take effect following the next federal election – former prime minister Julia Gillard described Ms Macklin as “a special combination of an enormous heart and huge brain”.

“She used both to drive compassion, caring and highly effective reforms for Australia. Our nation is immensely better off for her service,” Ms Gillard tweeted.

One of the architects behind the National Disability Insurance Scheme, the Brisbane-born Ms Macklin, who turns 65 in December, served as the Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs for six years until 2013.

The renovated four-bedroom plus study home achieved a price speculated to be between $3 million and $3.25 million.
