Actress Cate Blanchett and her playwright husband, Andrew Upton, have sold their quaint Melbourne base ahead of the scheduled March 9 auction.

The Prahran home sold ahead of a March 9 auction.

More than $3 million was achieved, sources say, for 5 Trinian Street, Prahran, backing onto Victoria Gardens.

The guide upon listing 19 days ago was $2.25-$2.45m.

Kay & Burton’s Rae Mano was the agent.

Tidy profit

The vendors paid $745,000 in February, 2006, for the single fronted Victorian on 236 square metres.

It was then extended and renovated – using Alwill Architecture.

The top storey contains two bedrooms and a retreat.

The ground floor has an open plan living/dining opening to a yard (story continues below).

The backyard accesses Victoria Gardens.

Also on this level, facing the street, is the master bedroom – with no ensuite.

The house also offers loft storage and an off street car park.

Ms Blanchett and Mr Upton have been UK-based about seven years.

In September, 2020, they sold an apartment – the largest in Sydney’s historic The Astor building, for $12m after paying businessman Mark Bouris $8m five years earlier.

Between 2004-2017, the pair owned a waterfront Hunters Hill home; it cost $10m and was divested for $18m after a renovation and extension also involving Alwill.

The couple are also believed to hold a Sydney investment property.
