Amazon chooses Melbourne for first Australian sort centre

Amazon’s proposed first Australian sort centre, off 700 Hume Highway, Craigieburn.

Amazon will open its first Australian sort centre at Goodman Group’s Amaroo Business Park, in Craigieburn.

The 15,600 square metre asset will accommodate about 200 people including office staff, in roles such as information technology, human resource management and operations.

The sorting centre building will spread 15,600 square metres.

Training will also be carried out there.

The announcement comes five years since Amazon chose a 24,387 sqm warehouse within Pellicano’s M2 Business Park at Dandenong South for its first Australian fulfilment centre.

In late 2020, the online retail giant leased another across town, spreading 37,000 sqm, at Dexus’ Horizon 3023 in Ravenhall.

The group has also committed to smaller sites at Melbourne Airport and Mulgrave for its Amazon Flex arm.

Amazon occupies fulfilment centres in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide too.

It rents a couple owned by Goodman in Sydney including a four floor, 200,000 sqm facility at Kemps Creek – the country’s biggest distribution centre.

Amazon getting bigger in Australia

Amazon’s revenue in Australia last year hit $1.75 billion; it was $1.2b in 2020, twice the figure of 2019 (story continues below).

Members of its Prime program accounted for $155m, a rise on the $35.4m in 2019.

The company’s advertising revenue also trebled last year.

“We chose Melbourne as the home of our first Australian fulfilment centre in 2017 and have continued to invest significantly in Victoria, providing employment for hundreds of Melburnians and improving delivery promises for our customers,” Amazon director of Operations, Craig Fuller, said.

“Opening our first sort centre in Melbourne signifies further our commitment to the state,” he added.

“It will create around 200 new local jobs for Melbourne ranging from entry level positions with on-the-job training to roles in information technology, human resource management and operations, all working in a safe and supportive environment, with competitive pay,” according to the executive.

Treasurer Tim Pallas added investment by groups such as Amazon sends strong signals internationally, that Victoria is open for business and is strategic location to invest.

Yuroke member Ros Spence added greater Craigieburn is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing residential regions.

The Amaroo Business Park is at 700 Hume Highway.
