Watpac Awarded Cochlear HQ Project Development at Sydney’s Macquarie University
Works include an integrated office fit-out, data centres, a research laboratory, and two basement-level car parks, along with manufacturing facilities including Clean Rooms.
Watpac began work on site this week, with the project due for completion in late 2010.
Watpac Limited Managing Director Greg Kempton said the appointment of Watpac as the Cochlear project builder was a significant event for the Group.
“The award of this project is a tangible demonstration of Watpac’s evolving strength and diversity, and our capacity to deliver complex and sophisticated projects across differing markets throughout Australia,” Mr Kempton said.
“This project is an extremely pleasing result that demonstrates Watpac is seen as a very credible Australian company excelling in its chosen markets.”
The project follows Watpac recently being awarded the $130 million redevelopment and expansion of the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Queensland, and the $30 million Skilled Stadium Western Stand project in Geelong, Victoria.
The on-going success of Watpac’s Construction business continues the positive realisation of the strategic move towards market and geographic diversification for the Group, which has produced a strong stream of exciting and significant projects for the Construction Division, totalling in excess of $1 billion throughout Australia.
Mr Kempton said the continued success of the Construction Division was a positive sign for the Watpac Group in an uncertain economic climate.
“The appointment of Watpac to these contracts comes at a challenging time for construction groups but serves as a welcome reminder that with the right focus, people and genuine collaboration excellent outcomes are still very much possible,” Mr Kempton said.
