The Wesfarmers owned subsidiary intends to build a multi-level warehouse on the 9400 square metre site. The proposed 14,000 square metre complex is subject to council approval. It’s proposed to include a 300 bay underground car park and outdoor nursery.

Watpac, the vendor of the site, has notched up $120 million in sales in the past year, according to the AFR.

Watpac Civil Infrastructure awarded Piazza della Valle project

Watpac’s Civil Infrastructure team in South Australia has been awarded the construction of the new Piazza della Valle precinct in McLaren Vale.

The $1.4 million project involves converting an old car park and surrounding areas into a new high-quality community space for the City of Onkaparinga.

Piazza della Valle (which means ‘plaza in the valley’ in Italian) is designed to recognise the strong Italian heritage of the local area, providing a central meeting space similar to piazzas in Italy.

The works will include pavements, construction of a shaded seating area, a water feature, and a performance space, with the project expected to begin in mid-November.

The project is being jointly funded by the Onkaparinga Council, the local community and the South Australian State Government.

The project comes as Watpac prepares to commence its Construction operations in South Australia, having recently announced the launch of its new entity Watpac Construction (SA) Pty Ltd.

Greg Kempton, Watpac Managing Director, said the Company was delighted to be awarded the Piazza project.

“Piazza della Valle is an exciting opportunity for our South Australian business to showcase its aptitude for high-quality civil work, and to contribute to the local community in a very meaningful way,” Mr Kempton said.

“We are looking forward to beginning work on the project shortly and to working with the community and the City of Onkaparinga in delivering a showpiece space that will be enjoyed by all.”

Vicki Osland, Piazza della Valle Italian Heritage Committee Chair, welcomed the announcement of Watpac’s appointment to the project.

Watpac’s Civil & Mining division has successfully bid for $40 million worth of projects in recent months around the country.

Yesterday in Queensland the division was awarded a $30 million contract on the Flinders Street Redevelopment in Townsville.

This major project for the Townsville City Council will see the existing pedestrian mall converted into a roadway and footpaths, reopening the space to vehicular traffic.

Also in Queensland, the team was awarded the Jellinbah Box Cut project in the Bowen Basin region, which will see the removal of one million bulk cubic metres of overburden removed in preparation for mining activities.

In Victoria, the division’s Civil Infrastructure team was recently awarded the Mackenzie Road Rehabilitation and Pavement Overlay project in West Melbourne, and the Bailey Street Link project at the Geelong Railway Station.

The Mackenzie Road project involves an overall upgrade to the southern section of the road, including construction of a new roundabout and heavy-duty pavements.

The Bailey Street Link project will see the team construct a new multi-use access road to the historic Geelong Station, allowing for the separation of commuter cars, bikes, and pedestrians from the bus interchange.

Greg Kempton, Watpac Managing Director, said the Civil & Mining division was experiencing impressive growth in both project scope and value.

“In the last three months, our order book for this business has more than doubled, reflecting our focus on building this important part of Watpac’s operations,” Mr Kempton said.

“The news yesterday of the award of the Flinders Street Redevelopment project is particularly pleasing, as it represents the largest civil project we have undertaken in that region, and is indicative of our significant growth.

“We will continue to work diligently to secure more projects that support our strategy of product and geographic diversification throughout 2010.”

Other Civil & Mining projects currently underway throughout Australia include the $20 million Brightstar Gold Mine project for A1 Minerals in Western Australia; the $40 million Douglas and Echo Mines project for Iluka Resources in Victoria; the $11.5 million Australia Gardens Cranbourne in Melbourne; and the Pinkenba Malt Works civil project in Brisbane.

The Civil & Mining division undertakes projects in the fields of road and rail works, dams and storage basins, contract open-cut mining, pre-strip and bulk earthworks, structures, sub-divisions, water and sewer infrastructure, bridges, coastal infrastructure, civil landscaping, commercial infrastructure, ports and marina works, and airfields.
