The group challenged the legal validity of last August’s council approval.

It said the development proposal was not properly advertised before it was approved, that the lack of advertising denied the group a chance to properly comment, and that the proposal did not comply with the local planning scheme. VCAT dismissed these, and two other claims, made by unCHAIN, ending a long-running attempt to shelve the project.

The St Kilda site will eventually make way for a $300 million retail and entertainment complex.

Former Port Phillip mayor Dick Gross told the Herald Sun “I am delighted with the ruling as it shows both that the Triangle decision is a good decision well made, and that the current council lied its way into power.

Current mayor Frank O’Connor said “The decision was simply a validation of the processes followed by the council in approving the Triangle development”.

In Victoria, new supermarkets are earmarked for Abbotsford, Albury, Caroline Springs, Maryborough and Strathdale. By the end of the year, the state will have 75 Aldi supermarkets, up from 69 now. It's been reported new stores are also earmarked for Geelong's Newcomb, Hamilton, Horsham, Morwell, Preston, Sebastapol, Swan Hill and Warragul.

]]> The company had previously reported it plans to open 25 stores per year.

Last month, Aldi opened its $35 million product development and quality assurance centre in Sydney. It is also building two new distribution centres in New South Wales and Victoria, to cope with the expansion.

Aldi managing director Michael Kloeters had previously said finding appropriate development site was one of the biggest challenges for the company, which opened its first Australian supermarket in 2001.

The 80,000 square metre $286 million facility will include about 20 stores including Melbourne’s second IKEA, and a Harvey Norman store.

The project was “called in” – effectively approved – by the Planning Minister Justin Madden last Friday, along with a 38-level apartment building and hotel in Box Hill, and another apartment tower in Southbank.

A spokeswoman for the Minister’s spokeswoman said submissions have been heard and a decision will be made about Woolworth’s application to build a 2,300 square metre retail building on a site at 93 – 105 Johnson Street. 

]]> The supermarket complex would be developed around the facade of the historic red-brick Metropolitan Hotel and close road traffic to Purdy Lane, in Maffra’s Central Activity District.
 
Mr Madden took control of the Maffra proposal from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last month, which was reviewing an appeal lodged by supermarket developer Ritchie’s IGA, to close Purdy Lane. This road dissects the site of the proposed new supermarket.
 
Meanwhile in Pakenham, Woolworths has paid the Cardinia Shire Council about $8 million for a prominent 2.9 hectare site bordered by John and Henry streets, Cook Drive and Treloar Lane, which will make way for an $80 million shopping centre.
