After five years, more than 550 objections and more than $200,000 in legal bills, construction of Fitzroy’s controversial “cheesegrater” apartment block will proceed.

A last ditch effort to challenge the development was effectively shredded away this week, giving the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and developer PDG Corporation a win over the Yarra Council to develop the distinctive 8-level, 136-unit project, on a vacant block bound by Napier, Kerr, Young and Argyle Streets.

In justifying its decision, VCAT cited the Government’s planning policy, Melbourne 2030, and the need for Melbourne to become a more compact city as its population rises.

Cr Judy Morton, Chair of Council’s Planning, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said the Council was disappointed with the decision.

PDG Corporation director Vince Giuliano argues the project has its share of supporters, with more than half the apartments already reserved by clients. Construction will start in months.

The project has drawn a divide amongst residents in the inner northern suburbs. While some believe it will destroy the character of the suburb, others argue it would enhance it.
