The $500 million plan will see Perth's central train and bus station sunk, and a new town square developed on land above. The development will include public gardens, retail, business and residential areas, and will connect Perth and Northbridge for the first time in 100 years.

WA Premier Colin Barnett said work will begin next year, and take four years to complete.

About $250 million of funding will come from the City of Perth council, Federal and State governments.

More than 1,650 new dwellings, and about 244,000 square metres of commercial space (office, and retail) is expected to be developed on the site.

Mr Barnett said the Northbridge Link “aimed at finally joining the entertainment precinct with Perth” and “would add vibrancy and attractiveness to the city.”

He said the project will be a legacy of this generation, to future generations.

“In a hundred years time the area we’re standing on now, which is largely a wasteland, will be the centre of a modern Perth in the 22nd Century.”
