PLANS for a giant Docklands nightclub capable of accommodating 750 patrons have been approved by ALP Planning Minister Justin Madden.

The Minister granted the development of Platform 28 at the Goods Shed, two days before the liquor licence hearing would have decided whether a licence should be granted.

The project is being developed by Grollo Group's Equiset, and will include two outside areas capable of accommodating 300 patrons.

Melbourne City Council planning committee chair Cr Peter Clarke told the Herald Sun there are about 65 substantial liquor licences in Docklands already, and that this is increasing at a rate of “two or three a month”.

Mr Clarke joined a growing number of councillors saying the council has no power to appeal decisions made by Mr Madden, who became ALP Minister after a popular career as a Carlton footballer.

Cr Clarke said the government was hypocritical, saying on the one hand it will crack down on city violence, while continuing to endorse large drinking bars.

He also raised concerns that the minister responsible for development at Docklands, was also in charge of liquor permits.

Mr Madden’s nightclub approval comes as the State government faces routine alcohol and drug fuelled violent and fatal attacks in Melbourne’s inner-city.

Tens of thousands of city workers and residents who walk over the Southgate Footbridge everyday will soon have a place to stop in for a half-time break.

An expression of interest campaign is being held for a unique 112 square metre island, which forms part of the bridge connecting Flinders Street Station to the Southgate entertainment complex.

Previously used as an ice creamery and cafe, council recently granted the site a permit for longer trading hours, and approved plans for glass walls, heating and a toilet facility to make it a year round venue.

Dixon Kestles director Brett Willis, who is managing the EOI campaign, said the lessor had provided consent to a liquor licence. It is expected a new venue could be trading from the bridge before the end of Summer.
