To Melbourne’s bourgeoisies, nothing spells exclusivity like a bathing box.

While investors often wait years for a box to become available, it would appear Christmas has come in July – with two listed for sale in campaigns by Hodges Real Estate Brighton and Hall & Hall Real Estate Mt Eliza.

The most expensive bathing box is in Dendy Street Brighton, the playground for Melbourne’s well heeled – and comes with an astronomical price tag of $150,000. Another in Mount Eliza is asking a relatively more affordable $60,000.

Bathing boxes are just 2.4 metres long by 2 metres wide by 2 metres high, and any purchaser must adhere to strict council guidelines managing such things as colour and repairs. “Owning a bathing box is owing a piece of Brighton history.” said Dendy Street selling agent Paula Witkowski.

There are 82 bathing boxes in Brighton and 1,860 around Port Phillip Bay. Most were developed between 1908 and 1911 and only three are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
