Scott Selwood turns developer with Geelong duplex proposal

Geelong midfielder Scott Selwood is the latest AFL sportsman to dabble in property development.

The 29-year old is about to start construction of two large units at 13 Vista Road, Newtown – a site he bought for $672,500 in 2016 as a development play.

Newtown is one suburb west of Geelong.

The first Vista Road unit being offered for sale carries a price guide of $1.4 million.

Marketed as a prestige family sized home, and with the quality of fixtures and fittings promising to be “next level”, the dwelling will contain four bedrooms, an upstairs rumpus room and double garage.

It will occupy a 400 square metre block with street frontage.

“There’s nothing comparative in the Newtown landscape in the way this will look and the quality of fittings and finishes we’re going to use,” Wilson agent James Wilson told realestate.com.au, which first reported the duplex development in this item.

Mr Selwood, who hails from Perth, is teaming with builders Built by Watson and Collingwood-based architect Tecture to deliver the townhouse project which is due for completion next March.

Yesterday, former Collingwood footballer Brodie Holland sold an Ascot Vale home for $1.52 million following a renovation.

Last month, a current Magpie player, Levi Greenwood, banked $1.175 million selling a South Melbourne terrace he bought for $920,000 in 2016, then renovated.

Newmark Capital is planning to add 50,000 sqm of office space within four buildings at its Jam Factory site on Chapel Street.

Two years earlier, the footballer, who is studying to be a carpenter, sold an Edwardian terrace in Northcote following a renovation for $1.31 million. Mr Greenwood paid $725,000 for 179 Arthurton Road in 2014.

Last month we reported that ex-Essendon footballer Dustin Fletcher was banking $785,000 from the sale of a duplex he developed in Wyong Street, East Keilor.

Several former footballers are involved in major property development, too.

This includes ex-Essendon player Andrew Welsh, who controls several development sites including land earmarked for housing near Melton. Last month Mr Welsh’s construction company Welsh Group commenced building the Armstrong Creek Town Centre, about 12 kilometres south of Geelong.

Former Carlton footballer Fraser Brown is also in the low-density residential real estate business. Mr Brown controls several sites in the outer south-east including the former Amstel Golf Club in Cranbourne, for which he paid $40 million in 2015.

Newmark Capital, which owns South Yarra’s Jam Factory, amongst several other noteworthy investments, is co-owned by ex-Hawthorn player and AFL commissioner Chris Langford.

Paul Tuddenham is part of a consortium building the CV complex in Hawthorn East.

Another former Collingwood player, Paul Tuddenham, is part of a consortium redeveloping the former Bilia Volvo site in Hawthorn East with a mixed-use complex containing an 8500 square metre office, 140 apartments and 2500 sqm of ground floor retail.
