Nicholas Bird Sells Doncaster East Home

The architect designed double storey home at 31 Bowen Road includes four bedrooms, a study, formal and informal living and dining rooms. It has a large indoor entertainment area downstairs and district views from a balcony upstairs.

Philip Webb Real Estate agent Zak Stojanovski is expecting the property to sell for between $530,000 to $580,000 when it goes to auction at 12:30pm on Saturday October 13th.

More than 750,000 viewers tuned into the ABC earlier this year to watch Bird’s most recent documentary, Vivian Bullwinkel: An Australian Heroine.

The documentary, which took five years to make, follows the life of Australian nurse Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of a Japanese massacre on Bangka Island, now part of Indonesia.

Bullwinkel was one of 22 nurses lined up and then shot by soldiers in 1942. She played dead after being shot in the waist, escaped and moved to Melbourne – eventually becoming the matron of Melbourne’s Fairfield Hospital. She was a key player in the struggle to have nursing education moved to universities.

She died, aged 84, in July 2000.
