Eleven, eight storeys earmarked for Dimmeys Richmond

Plans to build two apartment towers, of eight and 11 storeys, at Richmond’s outgoing Dimmeys store have unveiled.

The proposal replaces another, last year, which would have seen one large nine level residential building.

The developer is Richmond Icon, directed by members of Melbourne’s Liberman family.

It paid Dimmeys $16 million for the Swan Street property in 2008.

“The revised plans for up to 11 storeys are even more out of proportion with the heritage and building that the previous plans, more out of scale with the Swan Street heritage area and still block significant views of the landmark tower,” Fair Deal at Dimmeys anti-development campaigner Ron Pinnell told The Age.

Architect John Armsby added of the design: “it ended up that the form we came up with looked very much like X and Y chromosomes and it sort of ended up becoming a masculine and feminine building”.
