MCC Entertaining Plan to Reopen Swanston Street Walk to Traffic

Options being considered by the MCC include allowing 24-hour car access; shifting trams to allow a central bicycle stage – or pushing bikes out of the street completely.

"Each of the design options will be on display at public locations along Swanston Street, including the Melbourne Town Hall foyer and the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square," City of Melbourne chief executibve Kathy Alexander told the Australian Financial Review newspaper.

Under the leadership of Joan Kirner, cars were banned from Swanston Street in 1992, but allowed to return between 7am and 7pm from 1999.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle suggested Swanston Street Walk changes as soon as he took office.

The MCC is expected to make a decision about Swanston Street Walk later this year.
