Max Gawn’s East End Wine Bar opens near Camberwell Junction

Max Gawn

The Hawthorn East wine bar co-owned by AFL sportsman Max Gawn opens today.

East End Wine Bar fills part of a space occupied for 80 years until 2015 by Camberwell Junction retail institution, Young’s Auction House.

The Melbourne ruckman – who is playing his 100th AFL game today – leased the retail area last May – for a venue he had spoken about dreaming of opening, in a sports interview, a year earlier.

Saint James owners Richard Donovan and Craig Tate and Burnley Brewing’s Phil Gjisbergs are the business’ co-owners.

The consortium is paying starting annual rent of about $85,000 to occupy the 160 sqm space, following a deal negotiated by Knight Frank associate director Paul Pellegrino.

Their landlord acquired the 430 sqm building on a 445 sqm site at 225-229 Camberwell Road, from the Young family, before undertaking a refurbishment, aimed to position the asset to hospitality users.

With 16.9 metres of street frontage, near to the junction with Burke and Riversdale roads, East End Wine Bar is adjacent to The Rivoli theatre.

Also in the suburb, which is about seven kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD, Shanghai-backed builder Dahua Group Melbourne is proposing a distinctive apartment complex, Hawthorn Park, which will include 368 flats and a 25-metre sky-pool

Dahua paid $50 million for 33-57 Camberwell Road, the 5197 sqm site mooted for Hawthorn Park, in 2015.

Last November we reported that the owners of Sofia’s Restaurant were seeking to replace two adjoining Burke Road, Camberwell, sites, incorporating the long-vacant former State Savings Bank property, with an eight-storey apartment building containing 43 flats, and on ground level – a restaurant, café and wine bar.
