Mapletree Investments’ hotel brand Oakwood coming to Melbourne’s Fishermans Bend

Hotelier Oakwood, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Mapletree Investments, has committed to occupy a 40-storey serviced apartment and hotel complex under construction in Melbourne’s Fishermans Bend.

The Oakwood Premier Melbourne will be based at Blue Earth Group’s 202 Normanby Street, Southbank from 2022.

The building will contain a total of 392 suites, configured as 154 hotel rooms and the balance, studios, one and two bedrooms serviced apartments.

An all day restaurant, meeting venues, lobby bar and fitness centre are proposed as part of the development, as is a skyrise lounge to be known as Sky Bar Melbourne.

Oakwood interim chief executive officer and managing director of Oakwood Asia Pacific, Dean Schreiber, said the Melbourne hotel will be targeted to C-suite executives.

We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to introduce this luxury product to Melbourne’s prestigious Southbank Promenade [precinct], with the project being part of Australia’s largest urban renewal project at Fishermans Bend,” Mr Schreiber said.

Oakwood was selected as the operator by Yarra Hotel Group, which was represented by advisory firm Prime Square.

Earlier this year, Mapletree committed to occupy an 89-suite hotel, part of a mixed use tower under construction at 219 Thomas Street, Dandenong, about 35 kilometres south east of the Melbourne CBD.

Upon completion, this 20-level building will be Dandenong’s tallest tower.

Mapletree currently operates just one venue in Australia – a serviced apartment complex with 162 rooms, Oakwood Hotel & Apartments Brisbane, in the Queensland capital.

Blue Earth Group started construction of 202 Normanby Street last month.

In July, we reported that developer Capital Alliance appointed Crema Group to build another 40-storey building nearby, at 240 Normanby Road. This mixed use tower will include a hotel component, to be occupied by AC Marriott.
