Major Apartment Project Earmarked for Ritzy Balwyn

An application has been lodged with the City of Boroondara, to build 65 units, within three separate apartment towers, on the northwest corner of Whitehorse Road and Percy Street.

The buildings would soar three, four and five levels, and also be accessed by Hardwick Street.

The development will result in the demolition of the former Balwyn Centre building, which was identified as a significant site in the Camberwell Urban Conservation Study 1991, but is not heritage protected.

The Government sold the 5,620 square metre property for $9.9 million last June as a development site, after it was deemed surplus to the needs of the Department of Human Services, which had previously occupied the property.

A City of Boroondara spokeswoman said council expects to make a decision about the new proposal later this year, and after a formal public notice period.

Nearby, a four-level mixed use development was approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in 2008, for a site at 184 Whitehorse Road opposite the Balwyn Theatre building.
